Shield
Shields in Ultima Online are not just simple defensive items. Besides being used as a tool for parrying with the Parrying skill, they can also carry several useful properties in addition to base resistances. Beyond the basic shields you can obtain via crafting, loot, and random artifact drops, it’s also possible to find certain Artifact Shields:

Common Shield
The following shield types can be crafted with the related skills. Crafting with basic tools and base materials (Iron Ingots, Logs/Boards, Granite) will always yield a shield with basic properties; using special materials grants that material’s Material Bonus.
Crafting with Runic Kits can add magical properties, with number and intensity depending on the Runic Kit’s quality. Shields can also be improved via Imbuing. If the shield only has basic properties and is not made from a special material, you can use Runic Reforging in combination with Imbuing and Runic Kits.
They can also be found as normal loot, with the number and intensity of properties increasing based on the creature’s fame, the character’s Luck, and the facet. Medium/high-quality drops can come from major bosses in Mondain Legacy, Stygian Abyss, and High Seas, or high-quality drops from Felucca Champion Spawns. In both cases the shield is placed in your backpack and a yellow message will appear: "For your valor in combating the fallen beast, a special reward has been bestowed on you.".
